PROGRAM NOTES
Five Shades of Time was commissioned by the Seattle Creative Orchestra, and is dedicated to Phil Gelb, who premiered the work on Shakuhachi. The work looks at the melding of shakuhachi with western instruments, through five different lenses: Toru Takemitsu, Chinary Ung, Chou Wen-chung, Paul Chihara, Bright Sheng, and Tan Dun. It is also influenced by the work of Jonathan Kramer, especially around the concept of a "Vertical Time".
